The Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research

The Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research (CENSE) of the Fundação da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FFCT/UNL) is a research center devoted to the pursuit of interdisciplinary research in environmental sciences and engineering, focusing in the interaction between human and ecological systems, to promote sustainable development. The Ecological Economics and Environmental Management group is a research unit of CENSE that is particularly dedicated to the development interdisciplinary work, integrating environmental and socio-economic aspects. Its main areas of expertise are new approaches in the design and implementation of environmental policy instruments, participatory decision-making, sustainability assessment and valuation of ecosystem services.

Team members

Pedro Beça

Pedro is a researcher of the Ecological Economics and Management group of CENSE. He has a PhD in environmental sciences with a thesis on sustainable development indicators. His current research interests include sustainability assessment and indicators, ecological-economic modelling, and science-society interfaces. In this project, Pedro participates in the design of the theoretical framework of the project, in structuring the NETGREEN indicators database and also in promoting stakeholder engagement.

Giulia Iannuzzi

Giulia is a researcher of the Ecological Economics and Management group of CENSE. She holds an MSc in International Relations and she is currently enrolled in a PhD Program with a thesis project on Private Protected Areas in Europe. Her current research interests range from national and European environmental policies to conceptual approaches to sustainability. In this project Giulia participates in structuring the NETGREEN indicators database.
